National Museum of Kosovo

about

The National Museum of Kosovo has been operating since 1949 and is the oldest Cultural Heritage institution established for the purpose of preservation, restoration/conservation and presentation of movable heritage in the territory of the Republic of Kosovo. The museum consists of three museum units: the main building of the National Museum of Kosovo and the Lapidarium, the Emin Gjiku House Complex, and the Independence House. The museum is rich in collections from the section of Archeology with Numismatics, Ethnology, History and Nature. The main building of the National Museum of Kosovo is of particular importance from an architectural point of view but also because of its location, which is located in the core of the old part of the city. The Museum attaches great importance to the education of children and new generations about the values and preservation of Cultural Heritage through various interactive activities.

In the framework of the work plan, MKK also prepares educational activities and programs with the aim of raising the awareness of visitors of different generations and marginalized groups for the preservation and protection of cultural heritage.

These programs are designed and developed based on the Museum’s collection and are offered to visitors by defining target groups depending on age and the opportunity to access the Museum and its collection.

The initiative to create a section within the framework of the activity of the National Museum of Kosovo started in 2009-2010, starting with educational programs in the field of archaeology, in which educational camps were held in MKK and Ulpian as ABC for cultural heritage.

To date, educational programs in the National Museum of Kosovo aimed at children, students and people with disability needs are: – ABC for cultural heritage; – Archaeological and ethnological boxes; – The Moving Museum; – Mosaic School; – The games of our grandparents; – Treasure Hunters – treasure hunters; – Arts and crafts – Art and workshops; – Peace education-Education through Art; – Tactile approach; – Museum in a Box.

Additional information: In the next months, the Museum is going through the reconstruction of the storage, therefore we are searching for new methodologies to approach and access the museum collection to the visitor, developing new access programs.
